“…his theory of the writer’s career, that it should be seen not as a flight of stairs, constantly ascending, but a mountain range. It goes up and down and levels off, then drops and even falls away, only to rise again. It is jagged and imperfect, but it thrusts up above sea level and, in the end, throws some sort of shadow against the sky.”
